FHIM INFORMATION MODELING

Process

The information modeling process 1) Clarifies and scopes model content based on use cases considering legislation, policies and standards. 2) Focuses on defining standard based content for information exchange implementations while maintaining requirements traceability. 3) Incorporates bindings for coded data attributes to terminology code systems and value sets.

Content

Information modeling content consists of classes and attributes and the relationships between them, all modeled in the standard based modeling language called UML (Unified Modeling Language). As the content is modeled, it is harmonized across requirements from government, private sector and standards organizations.

Architecture

Information modeling architecture specifies FHIM classes, attributes, terminology bindings and the relationships between classes.  These structures support requirements from target implementations, such as HL7 V2, CDA, FHIR.  Terminology bindings associate data attributes with value sets and are specific to the target implementations.
